Take Spanish language lessons in Benidorm, as this city to the north of Alicante, is experienced in welcoming foreign people who choose it as their preferred vacation city. Besides its two main beaches, Benidorm is internationally recognized as per its wide offer of restaurants and its lively nightlife.

General Information. 70,000 inhabitants, although in summer and parts of winter, the population can rise into the hundreds of thousands, thanks to the great number of hotels and residences available to tourists. It is located 474 kilometres to the southeast of Madrid, in the Autonomous Community of Valencia, and 40 kilometres from the city of Alicante. The historic centre of Benidorm was settled on the site of a primitive fishing village, a promontory situated between the town's two main beaches, Levante and Poniente. It is here where the town began to take shape. Today it is one of the most important and well-known tourist destinations in the whole of the Mediterranean, thanks to its beaches, leisure activities and nightlife. There are two official languages in Benidorm, Spanish and Valencian; however, the latter is seldom used in the town. Benidorm is a very attractive place to study Spanish with some language schools offering a wide range of courses.

Surrounding Areas. There are numerous interesting places that are worth visiting, such as the towns of Altea (10 kilometres), Calpe (24 kilometres) and Guadalest (22 kilometres), the waterfalls of the Algar River, the Canelobre Caves (47 kilometres) and Benidorm Island (10 kilometres), a rocky crag facing the town, which can be reached via excursions in catamaran.

Main Sights. The Church of St. James (Iglesia de San Jaime), which was built in the 18th century and whose blue domes tower over a patchwork of side streets and picturesque nooks and corners. The Canfali Hill is a promontory leading down to the ‘Mediterranean Balcony' (Balcón del Mediterráneo), a lookout point providing beautiful sweeping views of sea and sand. Benidorm is well-known for its theme parks: Terra Mítica, Aqualandia, Mundomar, Terra Natura, Aqua Natura, Festilandia...

Culture. Two music festivals that deserve a mention in Benidorm are Electrobeach, an electronic music festival that takes place in the second fortnight of August, and the Low Cost Festival, a pop-rock festival in the second fortnight of July. Benidorm also has the Agricultural Museum (Museo de la Agricultura), the José Ballester Wax Museum (Museo de Cera José Ballester) and the Museum of Erotic Art (Museo de Arte Erótico). The most important cultural centres are the Centro Cultural José Llorca Llinares and the Aula Cam.

Beaches. Benidorm has over 6 kilometres of some of the finest beaches in Europe, stretching from Levante to Poniente. They face southwards and are protected in the east by the great rocks of the Sierra Gelada. Benidorm's beaches have been designated as clean and environmentally friendly and they possess the European blue flag award. You will find floating platforms, water sports and other fun activities, including a complete cable-ski installation. Those who are visiting in the winter months can enjoy the extraordinary atmosphere along Benidorm's promenade, with its numerous bars, cafés and busy leisure areas. It is very common to see sand sculptures on the Playa de Levante. The beaches are a major attraction for the many students who decide to study Spanish in Benidorm.

Shopping. The whole of the town centre, together with the Levante Beach Promenade and the Avenida del Mediterráneo, is an endless array of shops interspersed with outdoor bars, pubs and restaurants. Benidorm also has a shopping centre called La Marina. There is an antiques market called El Cisne, where you can enjoy live jazz music on Saturdays and Sundays. Other street markets include Foietes (Wednesdays) and Pueblo (Wednesdays and Sundays).

Gastronomy. The traditional tapas bars are located in the old quarter, while the more distinguished restaurants are to be found throughout the town. Paella is one of the most emblematic dishes, together with fish and seafood. On the whole, Benidorm offers a good balance between price and quality. There are also many cafés serving coffee and cakes as well as delicious breakfasts. There is a wide range of pavement cafés, bars, pubs, restaurants, dance halls...and all usually boast a great atmosphere.

Sports. One of the most popular sports in Benidorm is waterskiing, thanks to the cable-ski installations that can be found at Playa de Levante, which are in use from Easter to October. You can play or learn golf on any of the numerous golf courses. Other sports include go-kart racing, kayaking, speedboat racing, sailing, windsurfing, catamaraning, parasailing, fishing...The rich sea beds make it a haven for scuba-divers.

Fiestas. The fiestas which are worthy of mention in Benidorm are the Bonfires of San Juan (Hogueras de San Juan) in June and the Moors and Christians (Moros y Cristianos), which is held in the first weekend of October. But the most important are the fiestas that commemorate the patron saints, Our Lady of Suffrage (Virgen del Sufragio) and St. James the Apostle (San Jaime Apóstol). These begin on the second Sunday in November and include parades, theatrical performances and fireworks as well as other events.

Transport. Benidorm has a tram station which links the town to Alicante and other cities on the Costa Blanca, such as Altea, Calpe, Denia and Villajoyosa. There are good direct connections with Madrid by coach and also by train, passing through Alicante. Benidorm has a tourist train that runs all year long. The main stop is in Calle de los Almendros. It is easy to get from Benidorm to other Spanish cities by train or by using the various coach services.

Nightlife. Students who decide to study Spanish in Benidorm will discover a very active nightlife. Benidorm's nightlife is internationally famous as it boasts some of the most well-known discotheques, which are able to attract some of the best DJs in the world during the summer months. Things usually kick off in the old quarter where masses of young people are drawn to the typical bars. From here, the crowds move on to the promenade at Levante with its wide range of pubs, many with their own distinctive vibe. The night ends in the area of the discotheques, where you will also find the "after hours", bars that open at six or seven in the morning when other places are closing. Benidorm's favourable climate encourages people to go out and take advantage of this wonderful night-time atmosphere.
