General Information. 50,000 inhabitants, the total for the whole island being 130,000; however, the actual figures are much higher due to a large floating population and Ibiza's enormous popularity as a tourist destination. The city is located on the southeast coast of the island of the same name (570 square kilometres), which belongs to the Autonomous Community of the Balearic Islands, in the Mediterranean Sea. Its economy is based on services, especially tourism and trade. It was founded in 654 BC by the Phoenicians and has one of the largest necropolises of the Punic era, with nearly 3,000 rock-cut tombs, underground galleries in which people were buried. Today it is a small Mediterranean city containing an old quarter of picturesque narrow lanes lined with shops, stalls, bars and pavement cafés, and with an extraordinary atmosphere of freedom and tolerance among locals and tourists alike. Ibiza has two official languages, Spanish and Catalan. Ibiza is a very attractive place to study Spanish with some language schools offering a wide range of courses.

Surrounding Areas. The island of Ibiza has a very attractive coastline, with steep cliffs, bays and well-equipped beaches of fine sand fringed by crystal clear waters. The highest peak is Sa Talaia de Sant Josep, which stands at an altitude of 475 metres. In the northern part of Ibiza, the mountainous area of Els Amunts is alive with fields of almond trees clustered into small forests and groves. In the southeast, Ses Salines is a nature reserve made up of salt pans and marshes which attract numerous species of migratory water birds. Sant Antoni, located on the western coast, is a tourist resort and the second largest town on the island. There are also various Carthaginian, Roman and Moorish archaeological sites scattered throughout the island. Ibiza is situated in the Mediterranean, not far from the Iberian Peninsula, and can be reached in two hours by high-speed ferry from Denia, a coastal town in the Autonomous Community of Valencia. It is also easy to visit other nearby Balearic Islands such as Formentera (the nearest) and Mallorca.

World Heritage Site. The 14th century Cathedral, the 16th century Renaissance fortifications and the neighbourhoods of La Marina, Sa Penya and Es Soto were declared World Heritage Sites in 1999, a designation which also included the Phoenician settlement of Sa Caleta.

Main Sights. The Cathedral, built in the Gothic style and subsequently renovated along Baroque lines; the fortified old town of Dalt Vila, with its main gate, the Portal Ses Taules; the Punic necropolis of Puig des Molins, the largest and best-preserved of the Phoenician era. Other places of interest in Ibiza are the sacred mountains of Santa Eularia and Sant Miquel, the fortress-style churches, the watchtowers and the wells of Moorish origin.

Culture. The Ibiza White Experience Festival (April), held during the spring holiday period, includes various activities in the local discotheques, with guest DJs, live performances and craft workshops. Other important festivals are Ibiza Rocks (June) and the Ultra Music Festival (second fortnight of May). Les Ballades Populars are regional folk song and dance sessions which take place every Thursday at Sant Miquel and Sant Carles de Peralta. The main museums are the Puget Museum, the Archaeological Museum of Ibiza and Formentera, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Diocesan Museum and the Madina Yabisa Interpretation Centre, which is located in the nearby town of Santa Eulalia.

Beaches. Ibiza has 19 kilometres of coastline, where you can find beaches and coves with completely different landscapes and atmospheres; the most well-known are Playa de Talamanca, Playa d'en Bossa and Playa de Figueretes. Outside Ibiza and all around the island there are numerous beaches of all types. With the exception of Santa Gertrudis, every town and village is on the coast or within easy reach of the nearest beach. The beaches are a major attraction for the many students who decide to study Spanish in Ibiza.

Shopping. Ibiza has its own fashion style called "adlib", which basically consists of white clothing and natural fabrics and can be seen all over the island. The main shopping area in the city of Ibiza is the port, which is transformed into a bustling street market on summer evenings. Other important street markets include Punta Arabí in Es Canar and Ses Dàlies in Sant Carles.

Gastronomy. In the Santa Gertrudis neighbourhood you can find a number of bars that specialize in bread rolls with assorted fillings. In the historical centre there are numerous lively taverns in among the tourist shops. The typical dishes of Ibiza are arroz de matanza, a risotto-style rice dish made with tomato, onion and garlic and various types of homemade sausages and other pork cuts; frita de porc, a traditional pork dish made with peppers, potatoes and onion; sofrit pagès, a combination of gently spiced chicken, lamb and assorted pork sausages cooked in their own juices with garlic, onion and peppers and sautéed with cinnamon, parsley and saffron; lamb, chicken or rabbit stews; and, of course, all the usual Mediterranean fish and seafood. Various distilled liquors are produced on the island, such as frígola (thyme liqueur) licor de hierbas ibicencas (Ibizan herb liqueur), both of which enjoy Protected Geographical Indication status. Another typical drink on the island is café caleta (coffee with brandy, lemon peel and cinnamon, among other ingredients).

Sports. You can discover the treasures of the sea by scuba diving, one of the many popular nautical sports that you can learn on the island. Other activities include horse riding, mountain biking, trekking and exploring the coastline by kayak or sailing boat.

Fiestas. Ibiza's most important festivities are the Fiestas de la Tierra (first week of August), featuring numerous concerts and cultural activities in addition to the traditional street celebrations. It is also worth mentioning the Fiesta Medieval (second week of May), with a medieval market and street shows all over the city.

Transport. Nearly five million passengers pass through the international airport of Ibiza every year, a figure which puts it on a par with other major Spanish airports such as Seville or Valencia. If you want to explore other parts of Ibiza, numerous car hire companies offer a range of reasonably priced deals. There is also a bus network that covers many other towns throughout the island, as well as a night bus service called DiscoBús, which operates every day during the summer months, linking various tourist resorts. "The Ibiza Express" is a special tourist train with several different sightseeing routes in the city itself.

Nightlife. Students who decide to study Spanish in Ibiza will discover a very active nightlife. Having forged a reputation at the cutting edge of techno music, the island never fails to attract the world's best DJs year after year. The most well-known discotheques are Privilege, Amnesia, Pachá and Space. Another famous nightspot, located in the San Antonio area (16 kilometres), is Café del Mar, where you can enjoy magnificent sunsets while relaxing to the latest chill-out sounds.
