Learning Spanish in Barcelona. The tourist guide to study your Spanish course.

Study Spanish in the most cosmopolitan Mediterranean city of Spain: Barcelona. Try to enjoy all the options this city can offer to a student of Spanish in Barcelona: Avantgarde monuments, music festivals, cultural events and a great gastronomy are the extra values inner to this city.

General Information. Over four million inhabitants in its metropolitan area. 628 kilometres northeast of Madrid. Barcelona is the capital of the Autonomous Community of Catalonia. It is located on the Mediterranean coast, some 120 kilometres from the southern side of the Pyrenees, on the border with France. It is the second most populated city in Spain and has the eighth largest metropolitan population in Europe. The 1992 Olympic Games were held there. It was founded at the end of the 1st century BC as a Roman colony called Barcino. Barcelona has an outstanding choice of schools in which to study the Spanish language. The city has numerous universities, all of which offer a full range of graduate and postgraduate programmes. These universities also run various research and development centres. In Barcelona, as in the rest of Catalonia, there are two official languages: Spanish and Catalan. Barcelona is a very attractive place to study Spanish with many language schools offering a wide range of courses.

Surrounding Areas. Sitges (40 kilometres) has beautiful seafront promenades and a picturesque old quarter; Montserrat (45 kilometres) is a Benedictine monastery situated 720 metres above sea level; the Costa Brava (58 kilometres), in the province of Gerona, stretches all the way from Blanes to the French border; the Costa Dorada (75 kilometres), in the province of Tarragona, runs from Vendrell to the Ebro River delta. Both coasts are tourist areas par excellence, although the latter is the busier of the two.

World Heritage Site. Many of Gaudi's most emblematic architectural works have been declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO: Parque Güell, Palacio Güell and Casa Milà, better known as La Pedrera (in 2004); Casa Vicens, Casa Batlló, Cripta de la Colonia Güell, and the Nativity Façade and the Crypt of the Sagrada Familia (in 2005). In 1997, UNESCO awarded this accolade to the Palacio de la Música Catalana and the Hospital Sant Pau.

Main Sights. The ‘Church of the Holy Family' (La Sagrada Familia), designed by Catalan architect Antonio Gaudí. Construction commenced in 1883 but remained unfinished due to his death, although the building work continues to this day. The Gothic Cathedral, built between 1298 and 1450 (although the façade and the 90-metre-high dome date from the 19th century), has been a National Historic-Artistic Monument since 1929; the Palacio Real Mayor, formerly the residence of the Counts of Barcelona and, later, the Kings of Aragón. The 14th century Church of St. Mary of the Sea (Iglesia de Santa María del Mar). The Monastery of Pedralbes, founded by Jaime II of Aragón in 1326. Parque Güell, designed by Gaudí and built between 1900 and 1914, is now a municipal garden complex with characteristic architectural features. Milà House (Casa Milà), more commonly known as La Pedrera, built between 1906 and 1910, and Batlló House (Casa Batlló), both of which are striking examples of Gaudí's unique style. The Agbar Tower (Torre Agbar), designed by architect Jean Nouvel. Montjuic, with its 17th century hilltop fortress and views of the whole city, the Joan Miró Foundation (Fundació Joan Miró) and an open-air architectural museum called ‘Spanish Town' (Poble Espanyol in Catalan). The busiest leisure attractions are the Tibidabo Amusement Park (Parque de Atracciones del Tibidabo), Barcelona Zoo, Barcelona Aquarium, the Magic Fountain (La Fuente Mágica) and the seafront, from Port Vell to Port Olímpic.

Culture. In cultural terms, Barcelona can be considered one of the most important cities in Europe. There are numerous museums, concert halls, cultural centres and exhibition venues: the Caixaforum, the Barcelona Centre of Contemporary Culture, the Forum Building (Edificio Fórum), the Gaudí House Museum (Casa Museo Gaudí), the Picasso Museum in the Gothic quarter, the Miró Museum located in Parc de Montjuic, the Botanical Garden of Barcelona (Jardín Botánic de Barcelona), the Natural Science Museum in the Parc de la Ciutadella, and the city's main opera house (Liceu) and concert hall (Palau de la Música). There are also several shopping centres: La Illa, La Maquinista, Les Glòries, Diagonal Mar...

Gastronomy. Catalonia, together with the Basque Country, is the Spanish region with the most Michelin stars. Catalan cuisine is notable for its wide variety of typical dishes, locally grown produce and delicious desserts, as well as for its careful preparation. Generally speaking, the bars and restaurants are nicely decorated and take great care to ensure the comfort of their customers, which means that going out for tapas or dining in a restaurant is often transformed into a pleasant and memorable experience. The most interesting areas are the Gothic quarter, whose winding streets are full of tapas bars and small cafés; La Barceloneta and the Puerto Olímpico, with traditional and modern restaurants offering good fresh fish, Barrio de Gracia, with small tapas bars in among the boutiques and handicraft stores; the Eixample district with its modernist grid layout, home to university buildings, numerous bars ranging from the trendy to the traditional to the more downbeat variety, and bars with spacious outdoor seating areas frequented by young people and tourists.

Sports. Barcelona has countless attractions for the sports enthusiast, including numerous sports centres, the Olympic Stadium, the Camp Nou football stadium, the home of F.C. Barcelona, one of the most important football teams in Spain, the Mini Estadi, where the reserve team play, the Palacio Blaugrana (F.C. Barcelona's indoor sports arena), the Palacio San Jordi and the Palacio de los Deportes de Barcelona, both multi-purpose indoor sports arenas, the Velódromo de Horta... You can also enjoy a wide range of water sports, such as canoeing, catamaran sailing, rafting, scuba diving, diving... Both the F.C. Barcelona basketball team and Club Joventut from the nearby town of Badalona play in the national ACB league, and the city also boasts important water polo and swimming clubs and their excellent facilities. The Montmeló circuit, which hosts MotoGP and Formula 1 races, is also located within easy reach of the city, and various ski resorts in the Pyrenees, the mountain range which straddles the border between France and Spain, are less than two hours away.

Fiestas. On St. George's Day (Día de San Jordi, 23rd April) it is traditional for men to give women roses and for women to give men a book. During the Fiesta de la Mercè (24th September), over a million people flock to the streets to take part in myriad celebratory activities in honour of the ‘Virgin of Mercy'. Las Fiestas de Santa Eulàlia (10th December) celebrate the city's patron saint, and this traditional winter festival also marks the occasion of the City of Barcelona Arts, Sciences and Humanities Awards Ceremony (Premios Ciutat de Barcelona de las Artes, las Ciencias y las Letras). On 23rd June, St. John's Eve (La Noche de San Juan) is celebrated with beach bonfires and firework displays.

Transport. Barcelona's excellent transport infrastructure includes an extensive metropolitan network. El Prat international airport is the second most important in the country. Barcelona is linked to Madrid by high-speed train. The Barcelona Bus-Turistic offers guided bus tours on three different routes: Barcelona North, Barcelona South and the Forum. You can hop on or off at any of the 42 stops and change from one route to another whenever you want on the day you buy your ticket. It is easy to get from Barcelona to other Spanish cities by train or by using the various coach services.
