General Information. 127,000 inhabitants. 650 kilometres to the southwest of Madrid. It belongs to the Autonomous Community of Andalusia. The city is situated in the Cadiz Bay Nature Reserve. Lord Byron called it the "Siren of the Ocean" and it is popularly known as the ‘Little Silver Cup' (Tacita de Plata). Cadiz is the oldest Phoenician settlement in the West. Its most important sectors, such as trade and shipbuilding, are connected to the port, although tourism is also key thanks to its beaches and rich historical heritage. The city boasts the University of Cadiz (1979), which accepts some 18,200 students every year. Cadiz is a very attractive place to study Spanish with many language schools offering a wide range of courses.

Surrounding Areas. Puerto de Santa María (23 kilometres); Jerez de la Frontera (40 kilometres); various coastal villages, with exceptional white sand beaches, such as Conil de la Frontera (49 kilometres); Vejer (57 kilometres); Barbate (65 kilometres); Sanlúcar de Barrameda (53 kilometres), which is situated next to the Doñana Nature Reserve (declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005), with around 54,000 hectares of marshland and home to numerous migratory birds; Chipiona (53 kilometres). It is also worth mentioning the ‘white villages' (pueblos blancos) of the Sierra de Cádiz.

Main Sights. Cadiz Cathedral, which is also known as the New Cathedral (Catedral Nueva), whose construction was ordered by Alfonso X, ‘the Wise'; the Puerta de Tierra, an example of what the gateway to the city wall used to be like; just in front of this, you will find the baroque statues of San Servando and San Germán; the Telegraph Tower used by the Spanish military government during the Napoleonic Wars, which is now the Queen Sofia Cultural Centre; another communication tower, the Torreón de Puerta Tierra; the Gran Teatro Falla, a theatre built in a Neo-Mudéjar style; the Roman Theatre in the Pópulo neighbourhood; the ‘Customs Palace' (Palacio de la Aduana)...

Culture. The Spanish Music Festival (Festival de Música Española) takes place in November; the International Puppet Festival (Festival Internacional del Títeres) in December and the Ibero-American Theatre Festival (Festival Iberoamericano de Teatro) in October. You can visit the City Museum (Museo de Cádiz), which was inaugurated in 1838 and is situated in Plaza de Mina, and the Museo de las Cortes de Cádiz in Calle Santa Inés, which is a museum that traces the history of the city.

Beaches. La Caleta, the smallest beach in Cadiz, which can be found in the centre of Cadiz and has a rocky outcrop known as Faro de las Puercas; Santa María del Mar; Playa de la Victoria, one of the best urban beaches in Europe stretching for 3 kilometres; Playa de la Cortadura, which is 3.9 kilometres in length; Puntales; and finally, Torregorda, the furthest beach from the city centre. The beaches are a major attraction for the many students who decide to study Spanish in Cadiz.

Shopping. Cadiz's old quarter is only 5 minutes from the Port and here you can enjoy an afternoon of shopping. The busiest streets are: Nueva, San Francisco, Columela, Ancha and Plaza de las Flores.

Gastronomy. If you want to go out for tapas, then stopping by two neighbourhoods, La Viña and Pópulo, is a must. Cadiz is known for its seafood, such as portions of deep-fried fish (pescaitos fritos), all kinds of shellfish, shrimp omelettes (tortillas de camarones), fried marinated dogfish (bienmesabe), mackerel, ham, and a stew containing pork cuts, which is called berza. During your stay in Spain, you can learn to cook some of these dishes easily. The typical sweets and pastries that deserve a mention are chickpea fritters (panizas), honey coated pastries (pestiños), a type of cold custard (polea), pine nut candies (piñonates) and ‘Cádiz Bread' (Pan de Cádiz), which is a sweet cake wrapped in marzipan.

Sports. The football team, Club Deportivo Cádiz, play their home games at the stadium Ramón de Carranza. Cadiz has a range of sports facilities and sports complexes, such as Complejo Deportivo Puerto Elcano, Ciudad de Cádiz, Pabellón Municipal de Deportes Fernando Portillo and Real Club de Tenis de Cádiz. Surfing, kite-surfing and windsurfing are just some of the water sports that you can try your hand at.

Fiestas. The most well-known fiesta in Cadiz is the Carnival, which has been declared an Event of International Tourist Interest and is certainly one of the most important in Spain. Here there are official popular singing contests for groups which vary in size; these groups are known as chirigotas, comparsas, cuartetos and coros. In Holy Week the lay brotherhoods pass through the streets carrying images that depict the life and death of Jesus.

Transport. The Cadiz Bay Port links the peninsula to the Canary Islands and Africa. The city has a sightseeing bus that operates throughout the year. It is easy to get from Cadiz to other Spanish cities by train or by using the various coach services.

Nightlife. Students who decide to study Spanish in Cadiz will discover a very active nightlife. In the city centre you will find bars, taverns and pubs. Another good area for going out is Puerta Tierra, which is made up of Calle General Muñoz Arenillas and the Promenade.
