Learning Spanish in Valencia. The tourist guide to study your Spanish course.

General Information. Over 800,000 inhabitants, although the population of the metropolitan area exceeds 1,800,000. 325 kilometres to the east of Madrid. It is the capital of the Autonomous Community of Valencia and the third most populated city in Spain, after Madrid and Barcelona. It is known as the "capital del Turia", in reference to the diverted river whose old course was converted into a long sunken park that winds its way across Valencia. At the southern end of this dry riverbed stands the ‘City of Arts and Sciences' (La Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias), a cultural and architectural complex designed by Santiago Calatrava. Valencia has an outstanding choice of schools in which to study the Spanish language. The city, which was founded in 138 BC, has two public universities, the University of Valencia and the Polytechnic University of Valencia, as well as the private university CEU Cardenal Herrera. The official languages of the city and the surrounding region are Spanish and Valencian. Valencia is a very attractive place to study Spanish with many language schools offering a wide range of courses.

Surrounding Areas. La Albufera (10 kilometres), a nature reserve which includes the freshwater lagoon after which it is named, its marshy environment and the narrow strip of sand dunes which separates it from the sea; Sagunto (28 kilometres), whose old quarter contains interesting Roman archaeological remains; Cullera (38 kilometres), a coastal town with magnificent beaches.

World Heritage Site. The Silk Merchants Exchange (La Lonja de la Seda) was declared a World Heritage Site in 1996. It was built at the end of the 15th century to boost the burgeoning silk industry at a time when the discovery of America was causing important changes in trade routes.

Main Sights. The Cathedral, where the Holy Chalice is kept in a specially consecrated chapel; the Central Market (Mercado Central); two of Valencia's oldest churches, Iglesia de los Santos Juanes and Iglesia de San Juan del Hospital; Columbus Market (Mercado de Colón); the city's main railway station (Estación del Norte), a magnificent example of early 20th century modernist architecture; the Serrano Towers (Las Torres Serrano), part of the walled precinct which protected the old quarter until the end of the 19th century. The City of Arts and Sciences, a hugely ambitious complex which has become the icon of modern-day Valencia, is notable for the highly unusual architecture of its designer, Santiago Calatrava. Its many attractions include museums, aquariums, exhibition and conference halls, IMAX theatres and entertainment areas, as well as shows featuring performing seals and dolphins. It is worth visiting the Albufera Nature Reserve (Parque Natural de la Albufera), the Botanical Garden (Jardín Botánico), West Park (Parque del Oeste), the Royal Gardens (Jardines del Real), more commonly known as the Jardines de Viveros, and the Jardines del Turia, a park which occupies a 10-kilometre stretch at the southernmost end of the former river bed, where the City of Arts and Sciences now stands. Another interesting place to visit is the port, where the America's Cup was recently held and where Formula 1 races are organized.
