In the town of Denia in the region of Alicante, one of the most original and well known parties from the Spanish Summer is celebrated, the “Bous a la mar” (bulls in the sea). It is a show that attracts thousands of tourists every year and that all students undertaking a Spanish course in Denia enjoy.
It takes place during the town’s patron saint festivities, celebrated in honour of the Virgen de la Santísima Sangre (Virgin of the Very Saint Blood) (7th to 15th of July), declared of National Tourist Interest in 1993.
The festivity of the “Bous a la mar” is a combination of two local traditions, bulls and the sea. The objective of this celebration for participants is not only to avoid the bull but also to provoke him to follow them and jump in the water, all this without the need to push him. Once in the sea, a boat will help the bull to exit the water.
This show is celebrated ever day at 1pm and 7pm on a plaza de toros, with one side open on the sea, it is assembled for the festivities in the port of Denia, and participants and bulls are constantly dipping in the water.
It is a festivity showing big tourist attraction with guaranteed fun, so if you are undertaking a Spanish course in Denia, take part in this big celebration and enjoy it with all your classmates.
