Spanish sport in Spanish schools: Rafa Nadal, a tennis player for history

Andre Agassi, Roger Federer, Pete Sampras, Björn Borg, Boris Becker… all are on the list of best players in tennis history, Rafael Nadal has to be added to this list now. A sportsman you must have heard of during your Spanish lessons in the Spanish schools in Spain.

He became one of the biggest symbols of Spanish sports history and one of the best tennis players seen on the tennis court. He was born in Mallorca 25 years ago and has beaten many records during his short sports career with a lot of work and humbleness.

Sport is a great activity to learn Spanish

Rafael Nadal started to stand out when he took part in the first official competition, at 9, when he won this first tournament in theBalearic Islands. From then on until his incorporation on the ATP at 17, he has been winning national and international tournaments in the junior category. 2003 sees the start of Nadal in a Grand Slam tournament and in 2004 he gets his first ATP title with his first participation in the Copa Davis as part of the Spanish team.

In 2008, the Spanish tennis player becomes the best player in the world when he becomes number 1 of the ATP, taking Roger Federer’s place, his biggest rival during his career. It is now Novak Djokovic who is first of the ATP, after he won Rafa Nadal in June 2011.

During his career as a tennis player Nadal has won 46 titles in total, among which 6 Roland Garros, two Wimbledon championships and the victories in the Open Australia andUnited Statesstand out. He has also won a gold medal in the Olympic Games of Peking in 2008 and three titles with the Spanish team at the Davis Cup.

His success is such that, in 2008 he received the Premio Príncipe de Asturias of sports and, in 2009, the Big Prize from the French Sports Academy for the world’s biggest sport deed in 2008.

This year, if you are lucky and you are undertaking a course in a Spanish school in Seville you can get the most out of it and go see Rafael Nadal for the Davis Cup’s final, which takes place between the 2nd and the 4th of December. Seville is a very attractive big city, and one of the favourite places for students to go study Spanish in Spain, so if you are a tennis lover you have the opportunity to go visit the city, enjoy its nice atmosphere and enjoy this international competition.
