It is the city’s dish of excellence, it has its own festivity and last 12th of November, the potato tortilla of Betanzos became the best one in all of Spain, so none of the students undertaking a basic Spanish course in the city can leave without trying it.
This prize was awarded thanks to the Galician Alberto García Ponte, who resulted to be the winner of Spain’s XIII Potato Tortilla Championship which took place in Elcheas part of the competition ‘Lo Mejor de la Gastronomía’ (The best of gastronomy).
Alberto García, cook at the Mesón o Pote in Betanzos, received the award after defeating 10 other professionals from several restaurants in Spain participating in the final. The main secret which made the difference between his tortilla and the others is the almost raw yolk sauce which remains in the plate when cutting the tortilla, a very traditional way of preparing it in Betanzos which makes it look very juicy and mainly very desirable, and makes it one of the favourite dishes for students from the basic, professional, business or dele Spanish courses. Also, that way the egg’s flavour, colour and aroma are preserved.
This traditional but innovative way to prepare this dish show that the potato tortilla from Betanzos in unique, that it has a preparation and ingredients which make it an enjoyable dish. So, if you attend Spanish courses in Betanzos pop in the Mesón o Pote with your schoolmates to taste the best Spanish tortilla.
