Spanish is on the rise with almost 500 million native speakers from countries where Spanish is the mother tongue and from other countries where it is spoken for other reasons by an important part of the population. Spanish speakers are much more than natives given the important presence of bilingualism in many countries, mainly Spanish speaking or not.
The ranking-table that we present is organised by number of Spanish speaking people, with their correspondent percentage on the total population of each country. Mexico stands out as the indisputable first country per number of Spanish speakers, other countries where the language is not the mother tongue also have an important presence such as the United States, Brazil, France, Italy or Morocco, the number of people speaking our mother tongue is very important.
In the central columns of the table we present the number of native speakers, with their correspondent percentage on the total population of each country. The numbers were extracted from different sources, mostly Eurostat, Ethnologue.com, Ine, Eurobarómetro and Wikipedia. Data is not from the same natural year, the purpose of this is therefore only to offer an approximation of the number of people who speak Spanish in each country.
