Translation is closely linked to language courses. Spanish schools or any other language schools, usually have connections with linguistic institutions, and sometimes professionals who teach the Spanish courses also undertake collaborations in the translation area.
In Spanish in Tour we have carried out a study of international translator portals, providing an evaluation of their importance according to different variables, analyzed separately for each one of them. We can now present a relevance ranking of the international portals. Among them there are six independent portals and a translators association which also offers direct contact with translation professionals.
The variables used to elaborate this ranking were:
Nº of translators and agencies: The larger the representation of translators or agencies, the more importance we gave the portal.
Internet traffic: This variable is very important since it shows that the portal is popular and has internet visits.
Trends: This means the number of times that the portal name is searched for on search engines (Google…).
Natural positioning: This is the position they have in the search engines when we try to find them with specific keywords. We have carried out tests with different keywords.
Google Pagerank: Is the evaluation of the popularity that Google awards, at its published value.
Translator information: This is an evaluation of how comprehensive the translator’s card is.
Design and usability of the portal: This aspect was also evaluated for the good quality of the web page.
When we search for a translation service, we usually prefer a native translator or a translator with a lot of experience in the destination language, or even with great knowledge of the text specialization area. Automatic translators are very far from achieving quality work, for much more than just an idiomatic approximation. For a quality translation, be it official or not, it is sometimes convenient to count on sworn translators since they offer an additional guarantee. In any case, for long and lasting projects it is always important to check or seek a second opinion on the first translated texts.
Sworn translator is a qualification which, in Spain, is awarded by the competency of the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation. With it you are prepared for official translation on Spanish territory, from a foreign language into Spanish and vice versa. There are some university qualifications that give the title of Translator-Interpreter directly without exam. These are the ones specific for translation and interpretation.
Translation is an activity that has been gaining importance with the arrival of the global economy, expanding dramatically over the last years. Now, with the wide circulation of products, services and people, including money, everything flows in a much more dynamic way, and with everything else, documents and translations, most of them official. We hope that this study will help to evaluate the display of services for professional translators and also for service users to improve on its localization.
